Monsoon Ravages in Himachal Pradesh
An intense bout of monsoon weather has wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh, leading to tragic losses. As of now, 43 individuals have lost their lives, while 37 others remain unaccounted for in the state. The devastation has primarily been caused by cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides that have occurred since the onset of the monsoon last month.
Situation in Mandi District
Among the affected areas, Mandi district has witnessed the highest number of casualties, with 17 fatalities reported. The district experienced ten instances of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides that caused significant damage and destruction. Homes and structures in Mandi have been severely impacted by the natural calamities.
Rescue Efforts and Damage Assessment
The National Disaster Response Force, along with local authorities, has been engaged in rescue operations to save individuals stranded in various villages. Heavy rains have triggered landslides, leading to the blockage of roads and inundation of rivers. Many villages have been cut off from essential services, with houses and fields being engulfed by debris.
The incurred damages are substantial, amounting to a total estimated loss of Rs 5,000 crore. Numerous houses, cattle sheds, vehicles, bridges, and roads have been damaged or destroyed, with a significant impact on the local infrastructure. Relief camps have been established to accommodate those rescued, providing shelter and support to hundreds of affected individuals.
Continued Alert and Assistance
The State Emergency Operation Centre has issued an Orange Alert, warning of further heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh. The region continues to experience intermittent rains, further exacerbating the existing challenges posed by the monsoon.
Despite ongoing rescue and relief efforts, the situation remains critical, with essential services disrupted and communities facing significant hardships. Authorities are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the monsoon devastation and ensure the safety and well-being of the residents in the affected regions.
