Tragic Suicide Linked to Coin Scam
A retired security guard in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa city tragically took his own life after being deceived by an elaborate cyber scam. The victim, identified as Saroj Dubey, fell victim to fraudsters who promised him crores in exchange for antique coins. This heart-wrenching incident occurred on July 4.
First of Its Kind in Rewa
This unfortunate incident is believed to be the first case of suicide related to a coin scam in Rewa. Interestingly, a similar case in Mauganj district last year saw another individual ending their life after being swindled in a similar manner.
The Deceptive Scheme
The ordeal began for Mr. Dubey on July 1, when he received a call from an unknown number. The caller claimed to represent the “Indian Old Company” and stated that the government was interested in purchasing antique coins for heritage purposes. Intrigued by the promise of a significant reward, Mr. Dubey shared images of his collection with the scammer, hoping to claim a certificate worth Rs 65.75 lakh. However, this marked the beginning of a distressing scam.
Financial and Emotional Exploitation
As the scam progressed, Mr. Dubey found himself entangled in a web of deceit. He was coerced into paying various fees, taxes, and charges under the guise of releasing the promised amount. By July 2, he had already transferred Rs 37,000 to the fraudsters, exhausting his resources.
Tragic End to a Disturbing Scam
The pressure mounted on Mr. Dubey, ultimately culminating in his decision to end his life. Distraught by the continuous demands and threats from the scammers, he resorted to using his licensed revolver to take his own life on July 4.
Family’s Grief and Continued Harassment
Following the tragic incident, his family was left in shock and grief. Despite their loss, the fraudsters shamelessly continued to harass them for more money, even after Mr. Dubey’s passing.
Community Response and Legal Action
The suicide has deeply impacted the community near Chopra School, where Mr. Dubey resided. Authorities have taken cognizance of the case, registering it as a cyber fraud and abetment to suicide. Investigations are underway to uncover the extent of the fraudulent activities and apprehend those responsible.
