Indian Embassy in Beijing Resumes Tourist Visas for Chinese Nationals

The Indian embassy in Beijing has revealed on social media that tourist visas for Chinese nationals are once again available to visit India after a lapse of five years. The move comes after India and China agreed in April to restart the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, marking a significant step forward in people-to-people relations.

Visa Application Process

The Indian embassy’s WeChat post stated that Chinese nationals can apply for tourist visas by completing online applications starting from July 24. Applicants can then schedule appointments to submit necessary documents at centers located in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.

Despite the announcement made on social media, there has been no official confirmation from the Indian authorities regarding this initiative. However, sources familiar with the matter have verified the resumption of tourist visas for Chinese citizens and anticipate that the application process will soon commence.

Background

Following border clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in April-May 2020, India imposed severe restrictions on visas for Chinese nationals. The tensions escalated with a violent clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, resulting in casualties on both sides and straining bilateral ties.

The situation began to ease with an agreement last October between the two countries to disengage forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Subsequent discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Russia further aimed to normalize relations and address longstanding border disputes.

Positive Developments

Since then, various high-level meetings have taken place between officials of India and China, resulting in progress towards normalization. This includes the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage as well as talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on July 14.

Both sides have agreed to enhance people-to-people exchanges by facilitating travel and direct flight connectivity between the two countries. Jaishankar emphasized the need to build on the positive momentum in bilateral relations by addressing border issues and promoting economic cooperation, urging against restrictive trade measures.

Concerns have been raised over China’s restrictions on exports of rare earth minerals, which have implications for electric vehicle manufacturers. India has diplomatically addressed these concerns to ensure a smooth path for economic collaboration.
