Mumbai Rains: Water Level In Seven Major Lakes Nearing 90%

In Mumbai, heavy rainfall has brought the water level in the city’s seven major lakes close to 90%. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for today, anticipating more rain.

Lakes Reaching Full Capacity

Tansa and Modak Sagar lakes are already at full storage capacity. Other reservoirs are also expected to reach their maximum capacity soon. This means that Mumbai residents are unlikely to face water shortages next year due to the ample water supply in these lakes.

The seven major lakes in Mumbai include Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Vehar, Tulsi, and Middle Vaitarna. These lakes collectively hold a significant amount of water, ensuring stability in the city’s water supply.

Current Water Levels

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), as of Friday, Mumbai’s major lakes were at 87.21% storage capacity, with a total of 12,62,289 million litres of water collected out of their 14.47 lakh million-litre capacity.

Tansa and Modak Sagar lakes remain at their full capacity, while other lakes are quickly approaching their maximum levels due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.

IMD Alerts

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai on July 25, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. This alert comes as the seven lakes in the city have already witnessed a rise in their water levels in the past 24 hours.

Mumbai is expected to experience heavy rainfall today, followed by moderate rain in the coming days. Similar weather patterns are forecasted for Thane and Palghar regions as well.

Weather Forecast

IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in Goa, Konkan, and central Maharashtra regions till July 30. These areas are likely to receive significant rainfall during this period.
