Indian Army Veteran Faces Accusations in Pune
Hakimuddin Sheikh, a retired Havildar from the Engineers Corp in the Indian Army and a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh, found himself in a troubling situation in Pune recently.
Accusations and Harassment
A mob of 80 men, allegedly from a Hindutva group, along with two plainclothes policemen, intruded into his brother Irshad Sheikh’s home in Pune. They accused the family, including women and children, of being Bangladeshi citizens and demanded proof of their Indian citizenship, despite possessing valid Aadhaar cards.
Irshad Sheikh explained that the men, who later claimed to be police officers, did not intervene when the harassment escalated. Even after verifying their documents, the family faced continued pressure and harassment.
Unjust Actions and Threats
Despite filing a complaint about the incident, no action was taken. The family’s long-standing residence in the neighbourhood and their history of military service were disregarded as the mob persisted in their accusations.
The situation worsened when the accused men started yelling slogans and attempted to take family members to the police station.
Police and Verification
Local law enforcement officials claimed they were conducting a drive to verify the residency status of suspected Bangladeshi nationals. However, no illegal activities were found in the documents presented by the family.
While justified explanations and proofs were available, the family was asked to remain silent about the incident and refrain from further complaints.
The Indian Army veteran, Hakimuddin Sheikh, expressed his intention to seek clarification from the police regarding the unjust treatment his family faced.
Despite the Deputy Commissioner of Police denying the allegations of a mob intrusion, the incident remains a troubling example of unwarranted harassment and accusations.
