A major accident occurred on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Khopoli in Raigad district, involving approximately 20 vehicles.

Initial reports suggest that the accident was initiated when a container truck faced brake failure while descending a slope.

The truck, unable to stop, collided with multiple vehicles ahead, leading to a significant pile-up.
The incident transpired on the Mumbai-bound lane, within the Khopoli police station’s jurisdiction. The affected area extends from the new tunnel to the vicinity of Food Mall hotel, where numerous cars and heavy vehicles were damaged.
Although no deaths have been recorded thus far, several individuals sustained injuries. Various vehicles incurred substantial harm, with emergency responders present at the scene.
Official Statement
An official mentioned, “Following brake failure, the container trailer truck driver lost control, impacting around 20 vehicles. Notably, luxury cars such as BMW and Mercedes were among those involved, resulting in severe harm to 19 persons who were taken to a private hospital in Navi Mumbai for treatment.”
The truck operator is now in police custody. Tests confirmed that they were not intoxicated during the incident.
An inquiry has been initiated, with the investigative process ongoing.
