India and Maldives Strengthen Ties for Future Cooperation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India’s commitment to bolstering its relationship with the Maldives during his recent visit to the island nation. The discussions focused on various aspects of the India-Maldives partnership, emphasizing cooperation in infrastructure, technology, climate change, and energy.
Key Meetings and Agreements
During his visit, PM Modi met with Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef and discussed the crucial pillars of the bilateral ties. Both leaders highlighted the importance of continued collaboration in various sectors for the mutual benefit of their people.
PM Modi also engaged in constructive dialogues with Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the People’s Majlis, reaffirming the enduring friendship between India and Maldives. The establishment of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group further strengthens this bond.
Former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed, a staunch advocate of closer India-Maldives relations, reiterated the significance of the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the shared vision for the Indian Ocean region.
Commitment to Support
India remains committed to assisting the Maldives in capacity building and fostering developmental cooperation. PM Modi assured continuous support for the island nation’s growth and progress.
During his discussions with President Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi announced a significant line of credit worth Rs 4,850 crore to facilitate developmental projects in the Maldives.
Looking ahead, PM Modi is scheduled to attend the millennium celebrations of the Chola Emperor’s Maritime Expedition on July 27, further underlining India’s historical ties with the region.
By fostering stronger ties and collaborative efforts, India and Maldives are poised to achieve greater heights in their partnership, benefiting both nations and their people.
