College Student Found Dead
A 22-year-old college student, Arun C from Hassan, was found dead by suicide at his home on July 11. Arun, an architecture student at a private college in the city, was found hanging from an iron rod with a saree. He had returned home for the vacation after completing his eighth-semester exams.
Harassment Allegations
Initially, the case was registered as an “unnatural death” as no one was held responsible in Arun’s death note. However, his parents later accused three of his classmates of harassing him on a college WhatsApp group. They claimed this harassment led to their son’s untimely death.
The parents alleged that Arun had been facing mental harassment and humiliation by the three classmates for more than a year. Derogatory messages were sent about him in the class WhatsApp group, as confirmed by two of Arun’s friends to his parents.
Before taking the extreme step, Arun had recorded a distressing video and shared it in the same WhatsApp group. This information was only revealed to the parents post his demise.
Legal Action Taken
Following the complaint, an FIR was filed against the three students under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case is currently under investigation, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
Authorities are issuing notices to Arun’s roommates, friends, classmates, and college officials to understand the circumstances surrounding his death.
