Delhi Court Frames Charges in 2019 Jamia Violence Case
The case dates back to the 2019-2020 protests at Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh that followed the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Parliament on December 11, 2019.
Charges Framed by the Court
On March 7, additional sessions judge Vishal Singh at Saket court framed charges under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other acts. These charges included abetment of an offense, criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, assault, obstruction of public servants, grievous hurt, and damage to property.
The judge noted that Aasif was named in the FIR for being present at the site of violence and leading the mob, confirmed by call detail records (CDR) and the location of his mobile number.
Aside from Tanha, the court also charged former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Sharjeel Imam, identifying him as an instigator and key figure in the larger conspiracy to incite violence during the anti-CAA protests in Delhi.
Proceedings in Court
Recently, justice Sanjeev Narula requested Delhi Police’s response and set October 30 as the next hearing date, along with Shajreel’s plea against the same order.
Tanha, represented by advocate Siddharth Satija, argued in his petition that the order lacked mindful consideration of the evidence on record.
Besides the Jamia violence case, Tanha is also implicated in the broader conspiracy related to the Delhi riots. In 2021, the Delhi High Court granted him bail, along with Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, due to trial delays.
