The Delhi Police on Monday refuted a video shared by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on social media, claiming that a Bengali-speaking woman and her child were assaulted in the national capital for speaking their language, labelling it as “fabricated” and “politically motivated.”
Police Investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania stated that the police promptly responded to the video shared by the West Bengal Chief Minister on platform ‘X’, where she alleged that Delhi Police personnel brutally assaulted the woman and her child.
Upon inquiry, the woman in the video was identified as Sanjanu Parveen. She claimed that on the night of July 26, four men posing as police officers took her and her child to a secluded place and demanded Rs 25,000, which she purportedly paid. However, further investigation, including CCTV footage analysis, uncovered discrepancies in her account.
Political Influence
During questioning, Parveen revealed that her relative, a political worker from Malda district in West Bengal, instructed her to create the video. The video was initially circulated within Bengal and later surfaced on social media platforms.
DCP Dhania denounced the video as “baseless and fabricated,” suggesting that it was intentionally produced to tarnish the reputation of the Delhi Police. He highlighted the video’s seemingly political agenda to discredit the police force.
“This seems to be a deliberate effort to smear the image of Delhi Police through a politically motivated narrative. The investigation into this matter is ongoing,” stated SCP Dhania.
