How Excessive Noise Exposure is Damaging Young People’s Hearing

Increasing Hearing Risks Among Youth

In a recent interview, experts revealed that unsafe listening practices with personal audio devices like headphones and earbuds, along with exposure to loud music at venues, are causing a significant rise in the risk of hearing problems among young people.

Dr. Ghadge’s Insights

Dr. Murarji Ghadge, a senior ENT surgeon and sleep disorder specialist at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, explained, “In recent years, there has been a surge in hearing problems among young individuals, including school and college students, as well as working professionals. This rise can largely be attributed to the improper and excessive use of headphones.”

He further noted that many young patients experience symptoms like ear pain, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), reduced hearing ability, and difficulty understanding speech – all classic signs of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Identifying Causes of Noise Exposure

Shehnaz Shaikh, an audiologist at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, highlighted some common causes of noise exposure among the youth:

  1. Visits to loud venues like pubs, clubs, and movie theatres
  2. Excessive use of low-quality headphones and earplugs
  3. Continuous exposure to loud sounds at workplaces

She emphasized the importance of taking breaks from loud environments to prevent permanent damage to the inner ear.

Protecting Your Hearing

Dr. Ghadge emphasized the need to protect one’s hearing in today’s digital age, where screen time and noise-cancelling headphones are prevalent. He advised following the “60/60 rule” – listening at 60 percent volume for 60 minutes at a time, taking regular breaks, scheduling hearing check-ups, and raising awareness about hearing health.

It is crucial to start early in safeguarding hearing abilities, as hearing loss is no longer solely an age-related issue.
