Shocking Conditions at Florida Immigration Detention Centers
Undocumented migrants in Florida faced degrading treatment at three immigration detention centers, according to a recent report. The report highlighted the harsh conditions these migrants endured at the facilities.
Abuse and Inhumane Treatment
The report detailed incidents where migrants were shackled, hands tied behind their backs, and treated inhumane. Men were packed in cells for hours without lunch, forced to eat from Styrofoam plates, and described their treatment as “eating like animals.”
Female detainees at one center were denied privacy, forced to use toilets in full view of male detainees, and lacked access to proper medical care, showers, and adequate food.
Overcrowding and Harsh Conditions
The centers were overcrowded, with detainees held in buses for over 24 hours due to lack of space. Men and women were cramped together, unshackled only for restroom use, leading to unsanitary conditions on the buses.
After being transferred to a facility, migrants endured cold rooms without bedding or warm clothes, having to sleep on the concrete floor in what was called “the ice box.”
Delays in Medical Care and Tragic Consequences
Detainees suffered delays in medical treatment, resulting in tragic outcomes. A Haitian woman, Marie Ange Blaise, died due to the lack of necessary care at one facility. Witnesses described the slow response from guards and medical providers, leading to her untimely death.
The shocking conditions at these facilities, including the nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” were attributed to severe overcrowding and the need to accommodate thousands of undocumented migrants.
