Election Commission To Initiate Process To Hold Vice Presidential Polls

Election Commission To Initiate Process

The Election Commission will soon begin the process to elect the next vice president after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post. Sources indicate that the Union home ministry has officially notified Dhankhar’s resignation, paving the way for the election process to commence.

According to the Constitution, in case the vice president dies, resigns, or is removed from office, the election to choose the next vice president should take place ‘as soon as possible’. The upcoming vice president will serve a full five-year term as per constitutional provisions.

Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday, citing health reasons. The members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, along with nominated members, will participate in the election process to select the next vice president.

Once the notification is issued, calling the electoral college to vote, there is a 30-day period until the actual polling day. To be eligible for the vice presidential position, a candidate must be an Indian citizen, at least 35 years old, and qualified to be a member of the Rajya Sabha. Holding any government office of profit disqualifies a person from being elected as vice president.
