Positive Shift in India-Maldives Relations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Male to attend the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations as Guest of Honour. India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, G Balasubramanian, spoke exclusively to NDTV about the steady turnaround in bilateral relations and the road ahead.
A Reset in Relations
Speaking about the recent chill in ties between the two countries, particularly after President Mohamed Muizzu came to power in 2023, Mr. Balasubramanian mentioned that the diplomatic language has shifted from confrontational to constructive.
Building Partnerships
India’s consistent diplomacy, development aid, and people-centric engagement have strengthened the India-Maldives relations over time. The Greater Male Connectivity Bridge, funded by India, is a significant symbol of this partnership.
Economic Partnerships
The visit also resulted in extending India’s line of credit and initiating Free Trade Agreement talks, showcasing a deepening economic partnership between the two countries.
Independent Ties
India’s relationship with Maldives remains independent of its relations with other countries like China. The focus is on investment, education, and connectivity for mutual growth.
Future Prospects
Mr. Balasubramanian sees potential in enhancing people-to-people links, especially in tourism, healthcare, and education. Both countries aim to strengthen their ties for long-term benefits.
Consistent Friendship
India reaffirms its role as a trusted partner to Maldives, emphasizing the consistency in their friendship regardless of the changing administrations.
