Indian Men Scammed in Fake Canada Marriage Racket

Indian Men Deceived in Fake Canada Marriage Racket

Several men in India were scammed out of lakhs of rupees after being falsely promised marriage and a chance to settle in Canada, a dream that turned out to be a cruel hoax.

Deceptive Tactics Revealed

Sukhdarshan Kaur, along with two others, used deceptive methods to lure in potential grooms. She showcased her daughter, Harpreet, through photos and video calls to convince the victims that the marriage was genuine.

Doraha SHO inspector Akash Dutt stated, “Seven victims have been identified and have provided their statements regarding the fraud.”

It was disclosed that Sukhdarshan targeted unmarried men through matrimonial ads and would fabricate stories about her daughter residing in Canada. To build credibility, she arranged fake engagement ceremonies and demanded large sums of money from the victims.

Fraudulent Practices Uncovered

The victims, driven by their desire to move abroad, often overlooked verifying the facts about Harpreet. They ended up parting with significant assets or taking loans to cover the demanded amounts, only to realize they had been scammed.

Despite promises of imminent weddings, Sukhdarshan would delay or cease all communication post-engagement, leaving the victims in distress.

Exposure of the Scam

The scam was exposed when a groom-to-be discovered the ruse during an engagement ceremony in a hotel. Acting on a tip-off, the police intervened and revealed the elaborate fraud scheme.

Legal actions have been initiated with charges against the perpetrators under various sections related to criminal breach of trust, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. Sukhdarshan, along with two others, has been apprehended, while investigations continue.

It serves as a cautionary tale for individuals to remain vigilant and verify details before falling for similar fraudulent schemes.
