On Tuesday, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi delivered a strong speech in Parliament regarding the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. He questioned the government’s military strategy and demanded transparency about Indian fighter jets shot down by Pakistan.
Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Threat
The next day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned to transfer an ongoing state inquiry about the links between Gaurav Gogoi’s wife and a Pakistan-based non-governmental organization to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Chief Minister Sarma mentioned that the special investigative team (SIT) formed by his government believes a more in-depth investigation into the connections between the Gogois and Pakistan is crucial.
He also stated that he might recommend the NIA take over the investigation later in the year.
Political Accusations
The threat from Sarma came after comments made by Home Minister Amit Shah and Bharatiya Janata Party MP Dilip Saikia, accusing Gogoi and his wife of having ties with Pakistan.
Responding to these attacks, Gogoi mentioned that he had been to Pakistan before Narendra Modi and questioned why Shah brought up this matter.
He also criticized the government for not acknowledging its failures and instead diverting attention to military valour and patriotism.
Counterattacks
In response, Shah pointed out Gogoi’s visits to Pakistan and questioned if he had ever been to the border.
Sarma quickly joined in, posting excerpts of Shah and Saikia’s speeches on social media, accusing Gogoi of aligning with Pakistani interests.
Allegations and Deadline
Sarma raised concerns about Gogoi’s family holding foreign citizenship and hinted at revealing damning allegations, including involvement in gathering sensitive national security information, by September 10.
In May, Gogoi rebutted these claims, acknowledging his past visit to Pakistan but denying any current ties.
