Gunmen Kill 5 Civilians in Terrorist Attack in Southeast Iran
Gunmen killed five civilians during a “terrorist attack” on a judiciary building in southeast Iran on Saturday before being killed themselves, state media reported.
Details of the Attack
Unknown gunmen attacked the judiciary centre in Zahedan, the capital of southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province, as per the judiciary’s Mizan Online. The report stated that “Five people have been killed and 13 injured in this terrorist attack.” The counts are preliminary, and the toll may rise.
Three of the attackers were killed during the assault, as reported by the official IRNA news agency, citing the regional headquarters of the IRGC. According to Alireza Daliri, deputy police commander of Sistan-Baluchistan province, the attackers disguised themselves as visitors and threw a grenade into the building. Unfortunately, several people, including a one-year-old baby and the child’s mother, lost their lives.
Claim of Responsibility
Jaish al-Adl, a Baloch jihadist group based in Pakistan but also active in Iran, claimed responsibility for the attack. The province of Sistan-Baluchistan, located about 1,200 kilometres southeast of Tehran, shares a border with Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is a region marked by clashes between security forces, rebels from the Baluch minority, radical Sunni groups, and drug traffickers.
Security Challenges in the Region
The region has witnessed several violent incidents in the past, including the killing of ten police officers in a previous terrorist attack in October. Iranian authorities have been combating these security threats in the province.
