Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in Lahore: Updates and Impacts – GNP News

Heavy Rain Leads to Flooding in Lahore

According to reports from Dawn, heavy downpours in Lahore have resulted in widespread flooding, causing significant disruptions to daily life in the city.

Impact of Heavy Rainfall

The torrential rain in Lahore resulted in the inundation of low-lying neighbourhoods and major roads, shedding light on the city’s inadequate drainage infrastructure.

Data from Lahore’s Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) indicated that the region received an average rainfall of 58.8 mm. Nishtar Town recorded the highest rainfall at 84 mm, followed by Lakshmi Chowk (78 mm) and Paniwala Talab (74 mm), as reported by Dawn.

Key Events During the Rainfall

The rain occurred in two main spells: the first between 2:45 am and 5:40 am, followed by a heavier burst from 10:45 am to 12:11 pm on Wednesday. Critical locations like Jail Road, Qurtaba Chowk, and Wasa’s Gulberg office experienced significant waterlogging, with floodwaters mixed with sewage posing public health risks.

Challenges Faced by Residents

Residents in areas like Mughalpura and Barki Road encountered severe difficulties, with stagnant water obstructing movement and minimal assistance from authorities. There were concerns that the focus of water removal efforts was primarily on affluent neighbourhoods, leaving others stranded.

Efforts to Mitigate Impact

Despite claims by the Lahore Waste Management Company of deploying cleaning crews and emptying waste containers, residents in low-lying areas such as Farrukhabad and Johar Town reported minimal improvement, highlighting the inadequacy of drainage systems.

Impact Beyond Lahore

Heavy rainfall was also recorded in various districts across Punjab, including Khanewal, Rawalpindi, Sahiwal, Murree, and Okara, resulting in multiple fatalities in rain-related incidents as reported by Pakistan’s Rescue 1122 service. Meanwhile, Balochistan experienced fatalities and damage from heavy rain and strong winds.
