Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress has come under fire for offering doormats adorned with an image of Lord Jagannath, a revered Hindu deity. The product has stirred outrage on social media as photos depict the deity’s face on the mat with an individual standing on it, causing widespread criticism.
Controversial Product Listing
AliExpress listed the item as “Lord Jagannath Mandala Art Mat Doorway Non-Slip Soft Water Uptake Carpet Krishna Jaganath Hindu Go.” Described as a “Non-slip soft water uptake carpet,” the product was priced at around Rs 787.
Backlash and Criticism
Devotees worldwide have expressed their dismay at this offensive act. The sale of a doormat featuring the sacred image of Lord Jagannath has been condemned as a display of religious insensitivity.
Amar Patnaik, a prominent Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader, denounced the sale, labeling it as “shameless.” Additionally, BJP leader Baijayant Jay Panda voiced his disapproval, citing the deeper implications of disrespecting a revered figure like Lord Jagannath.
Public Outcry
Social media users have also joined the chorus of disapproval, demanding immediate removal of the product and an apology from both the seller and the platform. The insensitive portrayal of a deity held in high regard by millions has sparked widespread outrage.
