NASA’s SpaceX Dragon spacecraft recently undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) after completing various experiments. The Ax-4 crew, consisting of veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson, Shubhanshu Shukla from India, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary, were part of this historic mission – the first astronauts from their respective countries to visit the ISS.
Scientific Activities on the ISS
During their time on the ISS, the Ax-4 team conducted multiple scientific tasks. They collected blood samples for future medical analysis, cultivated microalgae as a potential food source, and examined nanomaterials with health monitoring applications in space.
Health Investigations and Experiments
The crew dedicated their final days on the station to human health studies. They tested electrical muscle stimulation, explored new fabrics for exercise suits, and documented their daily routines for a behavioral health study. As they prepared to return to Earth, they began packing up research equipment and samples onboard the Dragon spacecraft.
Collaborative Efforts
Members of Expedition 73 also assisted in the departure process. Tasks included finalizing the packing of Dragon with NASA astronaut Anne McClain’s help, processing blood samples with the assistance of Nichole Ayers and Jonny Kim, conducting routine checks with Takuya Onishi, and fitness testing with Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritskiy.
Return to Earth
The SpaceX Dragon is set to bring the crew and around 580 pounds of cargo, including data from over 60 experiments, back to Earth. After undocking from the ISS, Dragon will make its way towards a splashdown off the California coast, marking the successful conclusion of the Ax-4 crew’s mission.
