Pakistan Hockey Team Faces Financial Crunch for 2025-26 FIH Pro League

Pakistan hockey, FIH Pro League, financial crisis

The Pakistan hockey team finds themselves in a challenging situation as they may not be able to compete in the 2025-26 FIH Pro League due to financial constraints. This dilemma has put a halt to the much-anticipated return of the three-time Olympic champions on the international stage.

FIH Pro League Invitation

The Pakistan men’s hockey team, known for their four World Cup victories, received an invitation to participate in the FIH Pro League 2025-26. This offer came after New Zealand declined to join the upcoming season despite qualifying through the 2024-25 Nations Cup.

Financial Woes

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) formally invited Pakistan to compete against top-tier teams, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, and India, but the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) faces financial struggles that prevent them from sending the team to the Pro League.

The PHF has asked the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) for 700 million rupees (approximately USD 2.5 million) to cover the campaign costs, but the PSB indicated a lack of available funds for this purpose.

Challenges and Criticisms

The PSB demanded a detailed account of past fund allocations to the PHF and is reluctant to provide additional funding for player and official expenses, particularly after Pakistan’s loss in the FIH Nations Cup final to New Zealand.

Rasheedul Hassan, an Olympic gold medallist, expressed concerns about the PHF’s management and lack of transparency regarding financial matters, potentially leading to leadership changes in the federation.

Pakistan’s Hockey Legacy

Pakistan boasts a rich history in hockey, with numerous accolades in the Asian Games and Champions Trophy, showcasing their dominance in the sport throughout the years.
