Hundreds Protest Utility Cuts at Jai Hind Camp

Residents from Jai Hind Camp in Masoodpur village near Vasant Kunj gathered for a citizen’s convention to protest the abrupt termination of their electricity and water supply. The cuts, implemented under a Patiala House Court order, have caused a crisis in the settlement.

Residents Voice Concerns

The event, organised by Sangrami Gharelu Kamgar Union (SGKU), Collective Delhi, and Basti Suraksha Manch, saw residents sharing accounts of survival without basic utilities. Siya Bibi, a resident of 28 years, expressed how her children are affected by the lack of electricity.

The coalition has three key demands: immediate restoration of utilities, cancellation of the demolition order, and on-site rehabilitation if demolition proceeds as per Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board guidelines.

Community Solidarity

Residents highlighted their contributions as domestic helpers and garbage collectors, questioning the treatment they receive in light of the utility cuts. Activists emphasized the settlement’s long-standing existence and the need for rehabilitation.

The convention served as a protest and preparation for the upcoming court hearing, documenting hardships faced by residents. The Delhi government is yet to respond to the growing outcry over the situation at Jai Hind Camp.
