In a significant move to enhance passenger safety, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has given approval for the installation of CCTV cameras in the common movement areas near the doors in all 74,000 coaches. This decision aims to boost security and deter individuals or groups that exploit unsuspecting passengers, as stated by an official.
Successful Trials and Progress Review
The initiative follows the successful trials of CCTV cameras in the locomotive engines and coaches of the Northern Railway, demonstrating positive outcomes and efficacy.
Discussing the progression, Vaishnaw, along with Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu and Railway Board officials, evaluated the advancement of CCTV camera trials and installation. The recent development involves approving the installation of CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives.
Detailed Camera Specifications
Each railway coach will be equipped with four dome-type CCTV cameras – two at each entrance – while each locomotive will have six cameras, covering various angles for comprehensive monitoring. The configuration includes cameras at the front, rear, and sides, along with microphones in the cab section.
Ensuring High-Quality Footage
Emphasizing the importance of quality footage, Vaishnaw directed railway officials to ensure clear visuals even when trains are operating at speeds exceeding 100 kmph and in low-light conditions.
Exploring AI Integration
In a forward-looking approach, the Railway Minister encouraged officials to explore the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with the data obtained from CCTV cameras, in partnership with the IndiaAI mission.
Enhanced Safety and Security
The installation of cameras in the common movement areas of coaches serves the dual purpose of enhancing passenger safety and security while respecting privacy. These surveillance measures aid in identifying and addressing potential threats or miscreants, creating a safer environment for travelers.
Highlighting the modernization endeavors of Indian Railways, an official expressed the commitment towards providing a safe, secure, and passenger-friendly travel experience through such initiatives.
