PM Modi’s Visit to Tamil Nadu

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Tamil Nadu on July 26 and 27 to launch various development projects. One of the main focuses of his visit is to honor the legacy of Rajendra Chola I and the renowned Chola dynasty.

Commemoration of Rajendra Chola I

During his visit, PM Modi will participate in a special commemoration marking 1,000 years since Rajendra Chola I’s maritime expedition to Southeast Asia. The event will take place at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Tiruchirappalli on July 27. This occasion will also mark the commencement of construction activities to conserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, a commemorative coin will be unveiled by the Prime Minister to honor Rajendra Chola I.

Legacy of Rajendra Chola I

Rajendra Chola I, born in the 11th century, was a formidable ruler whose naval and military campaigns expanded the Chola Empire’s influence beyond India’s borders, reaching deep into Southeast Asia. He established Gangaikonda Cholapuram as the new capital of the empire following his victories. The temple constructed by him at the site is renowned for its monumental architecture, bronze sculptures, and intricate inscriptions.

Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival

The Aadi Thiruvathirai festival, to be attended by PM Modi, not only commemorates Rajendra Chola’s legacy but also celebrates Tamil Shaiva traditions and the 63 Nayanmars, saint-poets of Tamil Nadu. This year’s festival holds special significance as it coincides with Rajendra Chola’s birth star, Thiruvathirai (Ardra).

The Chola Dynasty

The Chola dynasty, which reigned from around 300 BC to AD 1279, was a dominant Tamil kingdom in medieval southern India. The Cholas impacted religion, culture, and architecture across South and Southeast Asia through a robust maritime trade network. They were known for their advancements in art, literature, education, and urban planning.

One of the notable achievements of the Chola Empire was the construction of grand stone temples that served as significant religious and cultural centers. The empire’s capital city, Gangaikondacholapuram, once a symbol of its power, stands today as a reminder of its past glory.

During his visit, PM Modi will inaugurate a new terminal building at Tuticorin airport and launch various infrastructure projects totaling over Rs 3,600 crore. He will also lay the foundation stone for the inter-state transmission system supporting the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant and unveil new cargo handling facilities at VO Chidambaranar Port.
