Girl alleges rape and forced abortion at Maharashtra shelter

An HIV-infected girl in Maharashtra’s Latur has alleged that she was raped for two years at a children’s shelter and was forced to undergo an abortion.

Details of the Allegations

The 16-year-old victim reported that she was raped by an employee four times between July 13, 2023, and July 23 of the same year at Sevalay, a shelter home for HIV-infected children.

After falling ill, she was taken to a hospital where tests confirmed that she was four months pregnant due to the rape.

Subsequently, the accused arranged for an abortion without her consent, as reported by news agency PTI, quoting an official who also mentioned threats to keep the incident silent.

Response to the Incident

Upon facing these horrific circumstances, the girl wrote a letter to officials and put it in a complaint box. Regrettably, the management of the institution failed to assist her and even destroyed the letter, according to the same official.

Following investigations, the founder, superintendent, and two employees of Sevalay have been arrested in connection to the case.

About Sevalay

Sevalay, known as the “happy home of children,” accommodates 23 boys and seven girls, all infected with HIV. The institution’s website highlights that all workers there volunteer their services.
