Visually Impaired Girl Allegedly Raped in Karnal
A mentally challenged and visually impaired girl was allegedly raped in Karnal, as reported by the police on Wednesday.
Details of the Incident
The shocking revelation surfaced when the girl, found to be six months pregnant, underwent a body examination mandated by the district’s child welfare committee.
The Chairperson of the CWC, Umesh Kumar, became aware of the situation on Sunday and promptly lodged a police complaint, denouncing the act as a “heinous crime.” Subsequently, Karnal police announced the arrest of a suspect linked to the alleged rape.
Victim’s Circumstances
The girl, aged approximately 16 or 17, is under the protective care of the CWC, as confirmed by Umesh Kumar in a conversation with PTI.
Explaining the delay in reporting, Kumar mentioned the impoverished background of the girl’s family. The victim’s mother shared that they refrained from seeking help out of fear, having been intimidated by the perpetrators.
On encountering the girl consuming clay on Sunday, Umesh Kumar observed distressing signs like froth around her mouth. Upon inquiry, the mother disclosed the harrowing ordeal the girl endured—gangrape by multiple individuals, resulting in her pregnancy.
Immediate Response
Upon learning of the situation, Umesh Kumar promptly arranged for a counselor’s intervention and the girl’s medical assessment, confirming her pregnancy.
The CWC has instructed the chief medical officer in Karnal to convene a medical board for a thorough evaluation of the girl’s health and to furnish a detailed health report.
