Apple Working on Automatic Updates for Sealed Mac Computers
Apple is in the process of creating a new update system for sealed Mac computers that would enable the company to deliver its devices directly from Apple Stores with the latest macOS version already installed. This move comes following the rollout of the latest macOS 26 developer beta, where evidence of this feature was discovered.
Sealed-Device Update System Unveiled
The most recent macOS 26 beta 3 that was released to developers and testers has revealed that Apple is developing a “sealed-device update system” specifically designed for Mac computers. As per a report from 9to5Mac, this system will allow Apple employees to update a MacBook within an Apple Store even if it remains sealed in its original packaging.
This process may sound familiar to some as Apple already employs a similar wireless update system named Presto for sealed iPhone units. Presto utilizes near field communication to activate an iPhone inside its sealed box, download and install the latest iOS version wirelessly, and then power it down.
Future Prospects and Implications
It remains to be seen how Apple plans to remotely power on its MacBook models or whether new hardware will be necessary to support this sealed-device update mechanism.
