Setubandha Scholar Scheme Launched to Bridge Traditional and Mainstream Education

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) division of the Central Sanskrit University, has introduced the Setubandha Scholar Scheme. This initiative aims to bring Gurukul-trained students into mainstream academia.

Scholarships for Traditional Scholars

The Setubandha Scholar Scheme will allow talented students from traditional Indian education systems to pursue postgraduate and PhD degrees, including opportunities at prestigious institutions like the IITs. Successful scholars will be granted monthly scholarships starting at Rs 40,000.

Postgraduate students can benefit from scholarships of up to Rs 1 lakh, while PhD candidates may receive up to Rs 2 lakh. The degrees obtained through this program will be awarded by the Central Sanskrit University.

Connecting Tradition with Modern Research

Professor Srinivasa Varkhedi, the Vice-Chancellor of Central Sanskrit University, shared that this scheme serves as a link between the ancient Gurukul tradition and contemporary research practices. He stated, “It will provide recognition to traditional scholars and pave the way for academic innovation.”

This initiative is a significant move towards revitalizing Indian Knowledge Systems and integrating traditional expertise into the formal education framework.

  • Minimum 5 years of study under a traditional Guru or in a Gurukul
  • Demonstrated excellence in traditional or classical knowledge
  • Areas of study include Mechanical and New Engineering – Mechanics and Digital Engineering

Professor Varkhedi emphasized that the Setubandha Scholar Scheme goes beyond awarding degrees; it represents a historic endeavor to restore India’s ancient knowledge systems on a global platform.
