Government Warns Employees on Social Media Usage
On Monday, the state government issued a circular warning employees about disciplinary actions if they fail to follow the newly imposed guidelines. The guidelines emphasize the responsible use of social media by government personnel.
Misuse of Social Media
The government pointed out that there have been instances of employees violating service rules and making negative remarks about government officials or political events on social media platforms. To address this issue, specific guidelines have been laid down to regulate the use of social media among government employees.
The circular defines social media broadly, including platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, and others. It highlights the risks associated with sharing confidential information, spreading misinformation, and not deleting inappropriate content.
Guidelines for Government Employees
Government employees and those associated with government departments are advised not to criticize state or central government policies on social media. They are urged to maintain a clear distinction between personal and official accounts and refrain from using banned websites or apps.
Authorized individuals can only promote government schemes through approved media channels. Any updates about departmental initiatives should be shared responsibly without self-promotion.
Consequences of Violating Guidelines
The circular stresses that employees must not share offensive, defamatory, or discriminatory content on social media. Violating these regulations could result in disciplinary action as per the Maharashtra Civil Services (Disciplinary and Appeal) Rules, 1979.
Employees are cautioned against sharing confidential documents without proper authorization, and they are advised to transfer official accounts correctly during role changes.
Strict Enforcement
The government has made it clear that failure to comply with these guidelines will lead to consequences. Employees found breaching the rules will face disciplinary actions as per existing regulations.
It is essential for government personnel to exercise caution and responsibility while using social media to maintain professionalism and uphold the integrity of their respective departments.
