Supreme Court Displeased with Karnataka High Court’s Bail Decision
Expressing its displeasure, the Supreme Court on Thursday stated that it felt the Karnataka High Court did not handle the situation properly when granting bail to actor Darshan Thoogudeepa. Darshan was involved in a case concerning the murder of his fan, Renukaswamy.
Details of the Case
Renukaswamy, a 33-year-old individual, was reportedly abducted by Darshan and his associates from Chitradurga. He was then allegedly tortured in a shed in Bengaluru in June last year due to some inappropriate messages sent to Darshan’s alleged partner, actor Pavithra Gowda. Tragically, Renukaswamy lost his life, and his body was disposed of in a drain.
Last December, the Karnataka High Court decided to grant bail to Darshan, which has now been questioned by the Supreme Court. During a hearing with a bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Darshan, was asked to provide clarification on the court’s decision.
Supreme Court’s Response
Expressing their concerns, the Supreme Court felt that the high court did not use its discretion wisely. They instructed Mr Sibal to focus on the witness statements instead of the high court’s order. The matter has been scheduled for further discussion on Tuesday, where Mr Sibal will have the opportunity to defend the high court’s decision.
Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra raised an issue about the presence of the actor with a key witness from the prosecution. However, Mr Sibal clarified that the individual was not a significant witness in the case.
Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra claimed that the actor was sitting on the stage with one of the prosecution’s key witnesses. Mr Sibal, however, shot back and said that the person was not a key witness.
