Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions: 9 Civilians Killed

Amid escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, the Royal Thai Army confirmed that at least nine civilians were killed on Thursday. These casualties occurred after Cambodia launched rocket attacks near border towns in Thailand.

Response and Accusations

The Thai Army’s official statement reported that nine people died across three districts near the border, with around 14 others injured. In response to the attacks, Thailand accused Cambodia of targeting homes and civilian infrastructure along the border. The Thai government condemned Cambodia’s actions, labeling them “inhumane, brutal, and war-hungry,” and urged international condemnation.

On the other hand, Cambodia accused Thailand of opening fire and using F-16 fighter jets in attacks.

Major Events

According to the Royal Thai Army, the civilian casualties included six in Sisaket province, two in Surin, and one in Ubon Ratchathani province. At least 14 individuals sustained injuries due to the clashes and attacks in these border provinces.

In response, Thailand deployed F-16 fighter jets, with one conducting airstrikes on a Cambodian military base. Despite Thai claims of hitting Cambodian military targets on the ground, Cambodia’s defense ministry alleged that Thai jets bombed a road near the historic Preah Vihear temple.

Cambodia called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting to address Thailand’s actions, labeling them as a severe threat to regional peace and stability. Meanwhile, both countries warned of further escalation, with Thailand vowing to intensify self-defense measures if Cambodia did not cease its attacks.

China, concerned by the conflict, urged both nations to engage in diplomacy and dialogue, maintaining an impartial stance. As tensions rose, the Thai baht experienced a significant drop following the conflict with Cambodia.

Amid the clashes, Phanom Dong Rak Hospital in Thailand was reportedly targeted by Cambodian shelling. Thailand responded by sealing all borders with Cambodia and granting full operational authority to its military due to the escalating situation.

Furthermore, both countries expelled diplomats following the border clash, adding to the diplomatic strain between Thailand and Cambodia.
