Tsunami Strikes Severo-Kurilsk After Earthquake

The Russian Academy of Sciences conducted a geophysical survey and captured aerial footage showing tsunami waves reaching Severo-Kurilsk in the wake of a powerful earthquake. The earthquake, measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale, is among the strongest recorded and led to tsunamis up to four metres high across the Pacific. This triggered evacuations in the US, Japan, China, and New Zealand.

Evacuations and Impacts

Footage shared on Russian social media depicted buildings in Severo-Kurilsk submerged in seawater following the tsunami. Authorities confirmed the evacuation of the town, which is home to approximately 2,000 residents. The severity of the situation was highlighted by various warnings issued in regions affected by the tsunami.

Residents’ Experiences

Reports indicated that the tsunami had flooded parts of Severo-Kurilsk, resulting in the evacuation of the population. While injuries were reported in Russia due to the earthquake, they were not severe. The governor of Kamchatka urged residents to stay away from the coastline as a precaution against further tsunami threats.

Locals recounted their experiences of buildings shaking and the resulting panic in the aftermath of the earthquake. Preparedness measures such as packing essentials like water and clothes were shared by residents, emphasizing the fear and urgency of the situation.

Aftershocks and Warning

The seismic monitoring service in the region noted that the earthquake was the strongest since 1952 in Kamchatka. Following the main quake, several aftershocks, including one measuring 6.9 magnitude, continued to rattle the region. The epicentre of the earthquake coincided with a historical temblor that caused a destructive tsunami in the past.
