Ujjwal Nikam Talks About his Conversation with Sanjay Dutt
The government’s key lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, now a politician in Rajya Sabha, shared insights into his legal career in an exclusive interview with NDTV. He highlighted a “secret” interaction with actor Sanjay Dutt during a significant court case.
Whispered Conversation
During the 1993 bomb blasts case in Mumbai, Sanjay Dutt had a whispered exchange with Ujjwal Nikam when the actor faced charges under the Arms Act. Nikam revealed that Sanjay lost his composure upon hearing the verdict and seemed visibly shocked.
“I saw his body language change. I felt that he was in shock. He could not tolerate the verdict and he looked shaken,” Nikam recounted.
When asked about the exchange, Nikam shared that he advised Sanjay not to display fear as it could be misconstrued. He believed in Sanjay’s innocence despite the legal offense he had committed.
The Incident
According to Nikam, Sanjay Dutt had possession of weapons due to an attraction to guns. He narrated an incident where Dutt received a van filled with weapons from gangster Abu Salem before the blasts occurred.
Although Dutt kept only one AK 47 from the cache and did not use it, his failure to inform the police about the weapons led to tragic consequences. The court acquitted him of terrorism charges but convicted him under the Arms Act.
Later, the Supreme Court reduced Dutt’s sentence, which he served in Pune’s Yerwada jail.
Legal Career
Nikam, known for prosecuting high-profile cases like the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, also addressed controversies surrounding statements made about terrorist Ajmal Kasab’s jail conditions, emphasizing the need to avoid politicizing sensitive issues.
Ujjwal Nikam’s revelations shed light on a lesser-known chapter in the legal saga involving Sanjay Dutt, offering a glimpse into the complexities of high-profile court cases and the personal dilemmas they entail.
