Controversy Surrounding AMMA Elections

The elections for the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) are set for 15 August. The leadership, predominantly led by Mohanlal, previously resigned following the Hema Committee report in 2024. Actor Maala Parvathi recently shed light on why Mohanlal is refraining from running for leadership again.

Baburaj’s Position in AMMA

Parvathi raised issues about Baburaj, who was accused of sexual abuse by a junior artiste, refusing to step down from his joint secretary role in AMMA. Interestingly, Baburaj aims to contest for the general secretary post in the upcoming elections.

Controversial Statements by Parvathi

Parvathi highlighted the inconsistencies in AMMA’s handling of accused individuals, pointing out that while some have been removed from key positions, others like Baburaj continue to hold prominent roles. She emphasized that Mohanlal’s resignation was influenced by Baburaj’s refusal to step down.

Pressure on Mohanlal

In August 2024, Mohanlal faced severe backlash after the partial disclosure of the Hema Committee report. The allegations of sexual abuse against director Ranjith and actor Siddique exacerbated the situation, leading to a joint resignation by Mohanlal and other committee members.

Mohanlal’s Recent Stand

Reports in June indicated that Mohanlal declined to contest elections for filling vacant positions, despite efforts by the ad hoc committee to persuade him to continue his term. The possibility of the old committee continuing without a vote was also discussed, raising speculations on Mohanlal’s successor as AMMA’s president.

These developments underscore the ongoing turmoil within AMMA, with key figures at odds over leadership issues and accusations plaguing the association.
