Special Task Force in West Tripura

A district-level Special Task Force (STF) has been formed in West Tripura District Police to detect, identify, and deport illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. This initiative is in line with the deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas.

Superintendent of Police of West Tripura district, Kiran Kumar, mentioned that the team members of the STF will upload biometrics, including facial photographs, fingerprints, and demographic details of foreign nationals, on the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) portal (mha.gov.in). Subsequently, the Border Security Force (BSF) will take charge of deporting them to their home countries.

Tripura’s Stance on Illegal Immigration

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha had declared in May that no illegal immigrants from Bangladesh or Rohingyas from Myanmar, or any other country, would be permitted to enter the state under any circumstances. Those who manage to infiltrate the Indian territory will be pushed back in compliance with the law.

Additionally, Tripura shares an 856-kilometre border with Bangladesh, making it the second-largest border after West Bengal. While most areas of the border are fenced with barbed wire, certain stretches remain unfenced due to local disputes.

Concerns and Incidents

According to a police report, foreign nationals frequently enter districts like Sepahijala, West, South, Unakoti, and Dhalai in Tripura. They utilize Tripura as a passage to migrate to various parts of the country in search of employment, housing, and settlement.
