After a four-year gap, Mumbai’s beloved mini train, fondly known as “Van Rani” (Queen of the Jungle), is all set to return to the tracks of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), rekindling nostalgia for generations of Mumbaikars and nature enthusiasts.
Reviving a Cultural Icon
SGNP, spanning 106.95 sq km in Mumbai, is bringing back the iconic Mini Toy Train after it was discontinued due to damage from Cyclone Tauktae in 2021. Launched in 1974, the train has been a favorite attraction for over 50 years, delighting children, families, and tourists.
Restoration Efforts
As part of a major redevelopment initiative, the Van Rani is being revitalized under the leadership of Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, with support from the Ministry of Railways. The 2.3 km route has been re-laid, and all 15 bridges reconstructed to ensure a safe journey.
A New Chapter
A new toy train unit has been added to the SGNP fleet, with successful test runs conducted recently. Stations like Krishnagiri and Teenmurthy are undergoing renovations to enhance visitor experience.
Enhanced Experience
The reimagined Van Rani will not only offer a ride but also educate passengers about wildlife, provide scenic views of the Deer Park, and showcase SGNP’s biodiversity, enriching the overall journey.
Promoting Eco-Tourism
The revival of Van Rani aims to boost eco-tourism and encourage the younger generation to connect with nature. The Forest Department is preparing to reopen the train and welcome visitors to create new memories.
