Penguins’ Unique Breeding Zones
Penguins are known to nest in specific areas known as breeding zones to avoid territorial fights. These zones are crucial for maintaining peace among the chicks.
Population Growth of Humboldt Penguins
In 2016, three male and three female Humboldt penguin chicks were introduced to the zoo. Since then, the penguin population has increased to 21 chicks, including Tom, Noddy, and Pingu who joined in March of this year.
The current accommodation space for the 21 chicks measures 150 sq ft. However, as the penguins mature, they will require larger living spaces to accommodate their growth and movement.
Challenges in Exchange Programmes
Despite offering penguins in exchange programmes to various zoos, there were no takers due to the high cost associated with their care. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, responsible for the zoo, has spent over ₹25 crore solely on the upkeep of these birds.
The expansion of the penguin enclosure will be assigned to the contractor working on the tunnel aquarium adjacent to the penguin area. The tender for the aquarium was approved in May, and construction is set to commence shortly.
