Udaipur Files Director Announces Film Release Date Amid Controversy

Udaipur Files, film controversy, Kanhaiya Lal murder

Udaipur Files director Bharat Shrinate confirmed on Friday that the film will hit theatres on August 8, 2025. This announcement came after the Supreme Court instructed the Delhi High Court to address pleas challenging the Centre’s approval for the movie’s global theatrical release on July 28, 2025.

Controversy Surrounding the Film

The movie revolves around the tragic murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, Rajasthan, in 2022. Bharat Shrinate revealed in an interview with NDTV that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has made significant edits, totaling 150 cuts, to the film.

Delays and Expectations

Due to censoring and legal issues, Udaipur Files faced delays from its initial release date of July 11, 2025. Starring Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiya Lal and produced by Amit Jani, the film is now anticipated to premiere on August 8, 2025.

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, director Bharat Shrinate expressed readiness for the movie’s release. Jani Firefox Films will soon kick off promotions, gearing up for the worldwide release of Udaipur Files on August 8. Shrinate affirmed, “Truth always wins.”

Legal Developments and Court Proceedings

As per a PTI report, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi stated that the appeal against the Delhi High Court’s stay order on the film’s release had become irrelevant. This decision followed the Centre’s clearance with specified edits and modifications.

The bench clarified that it refrained from passing judgment on the case’s merits, leaving the high court to address any contentions regarding the film’s release suspension.

Public Concerns and Reactions

Recent events saw a plea filed with the Delhi High Court, urging a halt to the film’s release amid fears of escalating communal tensions and public disturbances.

Kanhaiya Lal’s tragic demise at his Udaipur tailoring shop in June 2022, due to his alleged anti-Islam stance on social media, reverberated nationwide, sparking outrage and concern.

Originally named Gyanvapi Files: A Tailor’s Murder Story, Udaipur Files, which was initially slated for release on June 27, has continued to stir controversy and debate.
