Woman Arrested for Justifying Honor Killing
The incident occurred in the Sanjidi Degari area near Quetta a few days ago. Gul Jan Bibi, the woman involved, was taken into custody following the circulation of a video on social media where she defended the killings by claiming adherence to Baloch tribal customs.
Legal Proceedings
Gul Jan Bibi was brought before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Quetta, where she was placed on a two-day police remand for further investigation.
Explanation of the Incident
The video depicted Gul holding the Holy Quran and asserting that the act was not criminal but rather in line with traditional values. She explained, “My daughter, who was married with five children, was murdered due to her relationship with a Baloch youth who posted objectionable videos on TikTok despite our repeated warnings. In Balochi culture, such relationships are deemed punishable by death as per our customs.”
Arrests Made
Following the video’s widespread dissemination showing Gul’s daughter and her male companion being gunned down by a group of men in a hilly region, the police apprehended a tribal elder and ten others connected to the incident. This case gained attention after the footage went viral.
Human Rights Concerns
According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, there were 405 recorded cases of honor killings in 2024 across different regions of the country, shedding light on this alarming practice.
