Woman Endures Cyber Harassment in Delhi

A woman from North Delhi, who works in a multinational company in Gurgaon, suffered from continuous cyber harassment for more than two years. The ordeal culminated in the arrest of the accused, Yasin Shaikh, in Pune, Maharashtra.

Details of the Cyber Harassment

Yasin Shaikh, a 49-year-old auto-rickshaw driver without a criminal record, allegedly hacked the woman’s Facebook account. He posted her phone number with offensive captions and put up posters across Pune falsely portraying her family as involved in a disreputable business. This led to the victim and her family receiving numerous unwelcome calls.

The cybercrime unit of the Delhi Police, after prolonged investigation, apprehended Shaikh. During interrogation, he confessed to the crimes.

Impact on the Victim

The victim, a married woman from Sabzi Mandi in North Delhi, was subjected to a cyber harassment campaign around two years ago. Shaikh hacked her social media account, altered family photos to create inappropriate images, and shared them online.

He spread false information about her family, claiming they were involved in illegal activities and even shared her phone number with derogatory remarks, resulting in a flood of calls from unknown numbers.

Perpetrator’s Tactics

Shaikh frequently deleted and created new social media accounts to evade detection. In Pune, he distributed flyers with defamatory content about the victim and her family.

The relentless harassment severely impacted the victim’s mental well-being, leading to what authorities termed a “digital arrest” situation. The defamation also affected her family members.

Arrest and Confession

The situation escalated when the victim reported the matter to the Delhi Police. During questioning, Shaikh revealed that he knew a woman working with the victim’s husband in Gurgaon. Displeased with their association, he resorted to harassing the victim and her family.

Shaikh admitted to extracting the victim’s phone number from social media, creating defamatory posts, and harassing both the victim and her husband. His actions were motivated by a desire to punish the couple for not meeting his demands.

The woman he mentioned denied any romantic involvement with Shaikh, stating that she only saw him as an acquaintance and cut ties due to his inappropriate behavior.

The arrest of Yasin Shaikh in Pune marked the culmination of the long-standing cyber harassment case, bringing relief to the victim and her family.
